If your child is a fan of Caillou the cartoon show, you’ll be glad to here that there’s more of the Caillou world to explore. In addition to the wonderful show, there is a wonderful new book called Caillou and the Rain. This is an adorable story of Caillou doing what he does best: exploring his world and going on adventures!
It is raining outside and Caillou must dress up in his rain gear to go shopping with his mother. He stumbles upon so many distractions in the house that by the time that he gets dressed, the rain has stopped. Luckily for Caillou, there are plenty of puddles to jump in along the way to the store.
Caillou also gets to celebrate Easter with his family on the farm with Uncle Felix in the book, Caillou: Happy Easter! Throughout his adventure on the farm, Caillou rides the tractor, sees the animals on the farm, decorates eggs, and gets to search for eggs in the annual Easter egg hunt. He and his uncle find more eggs than anyone else in the hen house! This is a must-read for an avid Caillou fan.
2012 is the year for iPhone and iPod touch apps. These apps are becoming increasingly popular, as the devices fit easily into children’s hands, and can keep them entertained at crucial moments. Not only are they convenient, but they actually have some educational value, which I will discuss below.
PBS Kids has released a new app called Super Why Alpha Boost, which helps children enhance their literary skills. This is the third app that has been released in the Super Why series. The first was Super Why Paint, followed by Super Why. Super Why is the number two best selling app in the kids games and educational category. This new app focuses on phonetics (how to pronounce words) and teaching children how to recognize letters and words.
According to Lesli Rotenberg, Senior Vice President of Children’s Media, research involving the original Super Why app showed that it helped children to complete sentences and learn how to rhyme. In the Alpha Boost app, children can choose their character: Princess Pesto, Alpha Pig, Wonder Red, or Super Why. The app comes with over 100 party themed words. Children can look for “super letters” in the sky to help them along their journey, and the letters help to complete the party themed words. The user progresses further as more letters are collected. The fun part involves tilting the phone to the left or right to catch the flying letters!
I definitely recommend this app for your children. It spur their interest in letters and words in a fun and engaging way. The app itself is a mere $2.99 from the iTunes store. Of course we always have a great selection of Super Why toys too, so be sure to check them out!
Science was never my thing in school. In fact, I talked my way out of dissecting a worm in the 3rd grade. The teacher let me do some other tasks that counted in place of the dissection. However, when I watch Sid the Science kid, I am intrigued by the fun and interesting way that they present science. Each episode is loaded with information regarding the scientific experiment and methods for observation and can be categorized according to weeks.
The first week focuses on scientific tools and concepts, including observing, charts, measuring, and estimation. The second week focuses on transformation and change, including decay and growth, melting and freezing, and the effects of heat. The third week focuses on the senses. The fourth week focuses on health. The fifth week focuses on simple machines. The sixth week focuses on science that you can observe in your backyard. The seventh week focuses on the human body. The eighth week focuses on the weather.
All of these episodes are designed to engage the curiosity in your little ones and to help them figure out why things work the way that they do. For even more fun ideas and games, click here. I enjoyed playing “Snow Search” myself, and digging up objects in the snow. Other games include matching up snowflake halves, where kids learn about symmetry. For more cool stuff, see our kid’s online toy store. You can also check Sid’s page and find some cool pajamas (pictured above) which you can also personalize and keep your child warm at the same time!
