She was our favorite character: a little girl in a pink dress, decorated with green stripes and strawberries, topped with bright red hair and carrying a little pink kitty. Strawberry Shortcake began as an illustration on children’s greeting cards and developed into a best friend for girls across the country. Those of us with preschool-aged children now knew her when we were young. She lived with her friends in teeny Strawberryland, where every girl was named after a sugary dessert. My favorite thing about her? She smelled like strawberries!
Well, over twenty years later, Strawberry Shortcake is back!
This bubbly character franchise made a successful re-appearance in 2002, but disappeared again for a few years. Her most recent comeback was in 2009, when American Greetings partnered with Hasbro to launch an updated version of the character for a new generation of young girls. Strawberry Shortcake returned with a movie and continued into a television series.
Our old friend Strawberry Shortcake now lives in Berry Bitty City, under a berry patch. Instead of appealing to girls aged 2-7, the show now appeals to a bit older demographic, but this new Strawberry is just as cute and sweet as the one we remember. And many of her old friends– Blueberry Muffin, Raspberry Torte, Plum Pudding, Orange Blossom and Lemon Meringue—are back, too, and as sweet as ever.
In addition to the new movie and TV episodes, American Greetings’ partnership with Hasbro means that new fans of the character have plenty of new Strawberry Shortcake toys to enjoy! Similarly to the toys made over twenty years ago, Hasbro has made small, collectible figures, larger stuffed dolls, and Berry Bitty City playsets. You can purchase figurines of all of those beloved characters, and watch as this new group of girls discovers your old friends.
And, yes, the figures still smell just as sweet as the ones you remember!
