Ringing in 2009 with the kids

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

Every year I vow to do something special with the kids on New Year’s Eve, and every year I end up buying them a bottle of sparkling apple cider and threatening to send them to bed early by 8:00 or so.

Good times!

This year I may try something different. We’ll be visiting the grandparents, so perhaps a dump-n-run…? (Kidding! I’m kidding, Dad. Honest.)

Well, I did some poking around online, and there’s no shortage of ideas for ushering in the new year with your little ones. Here’s a few sites to check out if you’re looking for some ideas for tonight:

  • eHow has 8-step instructions for the evening.
  • AmazingMoms.com has plenty of party suggestions.
  • Family Fun is always good for some interesting ideas.
  • And Fine Living reminds us that New Year’s needn’t be an adults-only holiday.

Whatever you end up doing, have a wonderful evening. And here’s to a great 2009 from all of us here at Ty’s!

A tale of two rodents

Monday, December 29th, 2008

It was just a few days ago that I was talking about the Despereaux movie, and I still haven’t seen it, unfortunately. The holidays are a time for family togetherness and also, apparently, plagues. So, um, we haven’t been out to the movies yet. We’re far too busy tossing germs back and forth.

But I just read the review over at Toon Zone, and thought it was one of the most thoughtful pieces I’ve seen on it:

The Tale of Despereaux aspires to join the rarified company of classic animated fairy tales, but while the final film possesses ample charms, they are not quite enough to counterbalance the film’s flaws. In the end, The Tale of Despereaux tells a delightful story, but it doesn’t quite achieve the lift it needs to truly take flight.

I’m still disappointed, given how much we all loved the book, but I guess they can’t all be blockbusters.

On the other hand, thanks to my 4-year-old nephew I’ve now watched Ratatouille about four times in the last three days, and I’ve gotta say… it’s still good, every time. Talk about a movie that I never expected to be any good that completely blew away my expectations. The only problem with that movie is that it makes me hungry. But it’s a great flick.

So I guess that’s good news for Remy, but bad news for Despereaux. Sorry, Despereaux.

Happy Holidays from Ty’s Toy Box

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

The holidays are upon us, and hopefully you’re someplace warm and cozy with your family, and maybe even have a couple of days off work.

On behalf of everyone here at Ty’s Toy Box, here’s wishing you and yours a wonderful holiday season!

If you’re hanging out with the kids and looking for some holiday-themed things to do over the next few days, I’ve got you covered. Check out AmazingMoms.com for both Hanukkah and Christmas crafts, as well as FamilyFun.com (which also has plenty of both Hanukkah and Christmas ideas).

And of course, don’t forget my annual favorite: The NORAD Santa Tracker! My kids never tire of that one, and will be asking all day to check in on Santa.

Happy holidays, everyone!

Despereaux struggling a bit

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

I’ve really been looking forward to the Tale of Despereaux movie, and I’m sad to see that it hasn’t been receiving unanimously favorable reviews. So far the Tomatometer is running at about 52% positive. Which means that the kids and I will probably still enjoy it, but still.

I mean, just look at this. Doesn’t this look like a movie that ought to be amazing?

(See more clips and read more about the movie at Collider.com.)

I’m still hoping to see it this week. I trust that Despereaux’s large ears will entertain me even during the less-than-stellar parts.

There will be no escaping Bakugan

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

They’re on my floor, stuck on my lamps, and taking over my kitchen counter. My son has more Bakugan brawlers than I can count, and still he knows all of their names, stats, and special powers.

This is, by the way, the same kid who can’t remember to put on pants, sometimes. They don’t call it selective memory for nothing.

And so my life runneth over with Bakugan, but it looks like things are about to get even more Bakuganful (totally a word)—now we can stay tuned for the official Bakugan movie:

Universal and Stuber Prods. are hoping to capitalize on the latest toy craze among boys, entering into a deal with toy company Spin Master to bring “Bakugan Battle Brawlers” to the big screen.

[...]

“Bakugan” airs six days a week on Cartoon as one of its top shows.

No writers are on board, but the studio jumped at the chance to be in business with a toy that has a growing worldwide fan base. It also sparked to the concept and story line, which it believes will translate well into an all-ages action-adventure movie.

Soooo… will it be animated? Live-action? And most importantly… how long do you suppose I can hide this information from my son…?

You will likely be assimilated, and resistance is futile; so you may as well visit the Bakugan Store here at Ty’s for all of your Bakugan needs.

Worlds colliding: Kermit on Dr. Phil

Monday, December 15th, 2008

I don’t normally watch Dr. Phil, but of course I know all about him. He’s the relationship guru.

So I don’t know why I’m surprised to learn that tomorrow Kermit the Frog will appear on Dr. Phil.

Apparently, it’s not just my imagination that Kermit and Miss Piggy’s relationship might be a little, well, dysfunctional. The fact that Dr. Phil is having Kermit on his show, though, well… that leaves me nearly speechless. Check out the sneak peek:

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008. Check your local listings for the time and channel. This one looks like it will definitely be worth watching!

It’s a long wait ’til March for Monsters

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

Being the curmudgeon that I am, taking the kids to see Bolt and then discovering that our theater was charging an extra $2.50 apiece for the “rental” of the 3-D glasses completely annoyed me. Also, I wasn’t expecting much from the 3-D experience, itself.

Nothing made me feel better about the extra money we had to plunk down, but the 3-D turned out to be surprisingly good. Much better than the stuff I remember from my childhood. (You know, the movies where the 3-D effects were created using red and blue lines, and also dinosaurs.) And my kids actually cheered when the preview for Monsters vs. Aliens came on and and announced that it, too, would be in 3-D.

Or maybe they were just cheering for the movie itself. Check this out:

And now I see that some of my favorite actors (hello, Rainn Wilson) are part of the project. Really, do I have to wait until March??

I’m putting this one on my calendar.

Annie nominations full of Kung Fu

Monday, December 8th, 2008

I always love it when the Annie Award nominations come out—invariably they feature something that hasn’t even premiered yet. I mean, sure, I understand that this is how these things work. I do. But as much as I’m looking forward to A Miser Brothers Christmas on ABC Family this weekend, it cracks me up to see it as a nominee for Best Animated Television Production Produced for Children. I’d just like to see it first, is all. Heh.

View the complete list of 2008 nominees on the Annies site, of course, though Animated News has already done the math for us:

Kung Fu Panda leads all films with 17 nominations. Bolt was second with 9 nods, and WALL-E third with 8. Those three, along with $9.99 and Waltz with Bashir were tapped for Best Feature.

Well, I’ve at least seen the first three films on that list….

The Annie winners will be announced on January 30th, and until then we can all wildly speculate as to who will triumph. And also we can maybe go watch the nominees which haven’t actually come out yet. Ahem.

The Wonder Pets to Save the Nutcracker!

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

Now that we’re fully into December (how did that happen?), the holiday specials on television are in full swing. It becomes sport, in our family, to figure out how many times one can work “You’ll shoot your eye out, kid!” into a casual conversation. So yes, I’m a sucker for the classics, but that doesn’t mean I’m not open to a new show or two.

My kids have already set the DVR to record The Wonder Pets Save the Nutcracker!, each of them claiming it was the other one who really wants to see it. The episode premieres next Monday night (December 8th) at 8:00 p.m. on Nickelodeon. Check out the description:

In “Save the Nutcracker!,” directed by Emmy-Award winner Jennifer Oxley, it’s Christmas Eve and a Mouse King emerges from a picture book and steals the Wonder Pets’ Nutcracker from the classroom. Linny the Guinea Pig, Turtle Tuck and Ming-Ming Duckling pursue the Mouse King into the book, dancing through a wintery wonderland filled with sugar plum fairies and sweet treats to the music of Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” ballet. The trio persuades the Mouse King to give back the Nutcracker and be happy with what he already has in his kingdom. The Wonder Pets travel back to the classroom and on Christmas morning, they crack open their nut which magically decorates the classroom and brings the Nutcracker to life.

That actually sounds a lot more fun than the year I took my daughter to see the Nutcracker ballet and she fell asleep. (She was only four, but still.)

Don’t forget to visit the Wonder Pets Store here at Ty’s for everything you need to save the day!

Farewell to Bloo… forever?

Monday, December 1st, 2008

I have to confess that I haven’t been watching Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends lately. My kids have been favoring other shows, and if I’m going to fight them for TV time, it’s really not Foster’s I’m going to insist upon. (I have to at least pretend to be an adult, you know.)

But my understanding has always been that the show has been enjoying high ratings and rave reviews. As well it should; I consider Foster’s to definitely be amongst my top five favorite cartoons ever.

So imagine my surprise when I started clicking around online after a nice long weekend, only to discover that, apparently, the show will be wrapping up in February:

The last 5 episodes will air in 2009, and the last episode is titled, “Goodbye to Bloo.”

I went poking around on Toon Zone for more information, and found this forum thread, but not much else. I can’t believe the show is going to be over. It sort of feels like losing Teen Titans all over again.

I’m going to need cookies to get through this one.
