Ready for Thanksgiving?

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Ahhhh, Thanksgiving. Here in the United States, there’s nothing else quite like it. First you run around like a chicken with your head cut off (oh, wait… maybe that’s just me), then you eat yourself into a stupor and watch a lot of television. It’s the quintessential American holiday.

(I kid, of course. I’ve never actually eaten myself into a stupor. I prefer to eat until I’m just this side of a stupor, to leave room for a turkey sandwich later on. Heh.)

Here’s hoping you have a day of good food and wonderful family/friends planned, but of course you know I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t insist we spend a few minutes talking about the television offerings. Because TV is as much a part of Thanksgiving, for most families, as the meal.

You’ve got the football. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The football. The various program marathons. And did I mention the football? I think I may have.

I’ve particularly come to enjoy Thanksgiving television since growing up and putting on my own Thanksgivings; nothing causes my kids’ eyes to light up faster than my suggesting they go watch some more TV. And when I’m trying to baste a turkey, a child happily viewing is a child that’s not under my feet or about to get burned on the oven door.

Need a little viewing guidance for the holiday? I’ve got you covered.

Whatever you end up doing, Happy Thanksgiving from our families here at Ty’s Toy Box to yours!

Super Why! has arrived at Ty’s Toy Box

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

If you haven’t checked out Super Why! on PBS Kids, yet, you and your kids are in for a treat. Like all of my favorite heroes, our protagonist Whyatt (who can transform into hero Super Why!) likes to solve problems with… books! I can get behind that sort of philosophy, being an unrepentant bookworm, myself.

Here’s the opening sequence, to give you an idea of the show:

It’s a pretty catchy little show. I mean, it’s designed for ages 3-6, but my kids (well past that age bracket) have been known to watch it when they’re home sick. Just because the channel got stuck there, they assure me. (I am not fooled. It’s a cute show and they like it.)

So—needless to say—we’re pretty excited to welcome the Super Why! crew to Ty’s Toy Box, where they now have their very own Super Why Store. They’re a great addition to our already awesome family of licensed characters here. Welcome to Ty’s, Super Why – we look forward to seeing your new Super Why Toys.

They can all tell you how to get to Sesame Street

Monday, November 24th, 2008

If you’re not getting enough Sesame Street on your local PBS station—and really, maybe you even are, but you’re on the move and needing your kids’ favorite furry pals to be able to be wherever you are—good news! This month Sesame Street went mobile in a big, big way: It was announced that you can now access Sesame Street on iTunes, YouTube, and Hulu. It’s no small landmark for a 39-year-old show to get so connected, and no doubt parents everywhere are relieved to be able to load Elmo up on their laptops and iPods.

Complete episodes of the show on iTunes cost $1.99 apiece, with 70% of the revenue going directly back to Sesame Workshop.

Meanwhile, Hulu and YouTube offer clips organized by special guest star or segment theme.

It’s a whole new way to get to Sesame Street!

Don’t forget to visit the Sesame Street Store here at Ty’s Toy Box for all of your other Sesame Street needs!

Disney does it again with Bolt

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

I knew back when we saw the first preview that we’d be adding Bolt to our list of must-see movies. In fact, I even wrote about it. And with anticipation running high about seeing it this weekend, I was relieved to see that it’s apparently living up to the hype.

That’s right: Bolt is currently hovering around 90% Fresh on the Tomatometer. Phew! Too often I’ve told the kids that sure, we’ll go see such-and-such movie when it comes out… and then as it nears, I check the reviews and discover that it’s an utter flop. And then I have to come up with an explanation for the kids as to why we’ve decided not to go. Ugh.

In preparation for hitting the theater this weekend, I went looking for another Bolt trailer, and found this:

Hee. Hey, Hamsters can be High School Musical fans, too!

Pinocchio’s getting a makeover

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

I’ve been meaning to tell you about this one for a few days—it seems that Pinocchio is getting a modern makeover:

A new version of “Pinocchio” is on its way to the big screen, this one to be co-directed by acclaimed children’s book illustrator Gris Grimly and executive produced by Guillermo del Toro.

The adaptation, being made by the Jim Henson Co., will be done as a stop-motion animated feature. Henson co-CEOs Brian Henson and Lisa Henson and senior vp feature films Jason Lust are producing.

The aim is to make a dark, twisted retelling of the famous Carlo Collodi fairy tale about the wooden puppet who dreams of becoming a real boy. In the retelling, when Pinocchio comes to life, he turns out not to be that nice of a boy, creating mischief and playing mean tricks. He eventually learns a few lessons. The story and the look of the feature will be based on the 2002 children’s book illustrated by Grimly, who is repped by Gotham Group.

And I know I’m dating myself, here, but when I saw the headline (‘Pinocchio’ to feature Gris Grimly as director) I immediately thought it said it would be directed by Ed Grimley. But, ah, no. It’s Gris Grimly. Still very cool, but different.

(Though how cool would it be if it was directed by Ed Grimley…? Okay, shutting up, now.)

Greg Page back on stage (without The Wiggles)

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

We all know that Ty’s Toy Box president Ty Simpson is a huge fan of The Wiggles (allow me to refresh your memory, if necessary!), so it was no surprise to me when Ty was the one to forward this article along. It seems that former yellow Wiggle Greg Page was on stage last week:

HE MAY be missing Dorothy the Dinosaur and battling illness but not all is doom and gloom for Greg Page, the original yellow Wiggle.

Two years after quitting the popular children’s entertainment group due to illness, Page, 36, said he could see some upside in no longer being a touring artist doing hundreds of shows a year.

“I don’t miss travelling on buses overnight, or living out of suitcases,” he said. “But I miss doing the shows and going to places like New York.”

Page was in Melbourne yesterday, and back on stage for the first time since leaving the group, to perform MC duties at the City of Melbourne’s Christmas tree-lighting ceremony.

“This is really the first showbusiness thing I’ve done in two years,” he said. “It is a step, and if it goes well for me physically then I think it will be a big step towards getting back to doing things in the public eye.”

The article goes on to say that Page rates Sam Moran, his successor, as “10 out of 10.” I guess that makes it unlikely that a yellow shirt showdown—maybe a wrestling match of some kind—might be forthcoming…?

C’mon. Admit it. That would be kind of awesome. “Which yellow shirt shall triumph and earn the right to call himself a Wiggle?”

Oh, fine. They’ll probably just shake hands and stuff. But my idea is totally better.

Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! has arrived at Ty’s Toy Box

Monday, November 17th, 2008

If you’re not already watching Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! on Nick Jr., what are you waiting for? That’s a silly question, though—if you have little ones, you’re surely watching it already. Wubbzy has an energy level to match your preschooler’s, even when you’re slumped over that first cup of coffee and trying to regain your will to live. (Yes, my kids are older now, but I remember those days all too well, I assure you.)

Just watching the show’s intro makes me feel like a lazy slug:

Wubbzy, Widget and Walden are ready to subtly slip some great lessons about values like honesty into a packed half-hour of fun and hilarity, and that’s makes ‘em alright by me. You can check out the official site or their Nick Jr. site for more, and of course now you can find all your Wubbzy needs at the brank-spankin’-new Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! Store right here at Ty’s Toy Box. (Personally, I recommend the Disco Dancin Wubbzy, not so much because he dances but because he has excellent hair. You’re welcome!)

Welcome to Ty’s, Wubbzy! I feel more wubbulous, already.

More movie news: Oscars and Karate Kid

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

It seems hard to believe that it’s time for the 2008 Oscar submissions, already, but apparently it is. Stranger still is of course the fact that every year the submissions come in and feature several movies slated to be holiday blockbusters—and, therefore, haven’t actually debuted, yet.

Every year this annoys me, and yet, they don’t stop doing it. I should write someone a stern letter, or something. Hmph.

Nevertheless, here are the 2008 Oscar nominees for best animated feature:

Bolt
Delgo
Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!
Dragon Hunters
Fly Me to the Moon
Igor
Kung Fu Panda
Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa
$9.99
The Sky Crawlers
Sword of the Stranger
The Tale of Despereaux
WALL-E
Waltz with Bashir

Looking at that list really has me ready for some great films in the next two months. Although if The Tale of Despereaux isn’t amazing I’m going to have to write several stern letters. It’s such a great book—I hope it’ll be a fabulous film.

In other movie news, I’m sure everyone who’s ever used the phrase “Wax on, wax off” will be pleased to know that a Karate Kid remake is in the works (with Will Smith’s kid in the title role). I wonder who they’ll have play Mr. Miyagi. It’d be too much to hope for Jackie Chan, right…?

It’s that special season…

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

No, not the one where we haven’t even had Thanksgiving yet and the stores are already playing Christmas Carols—though it’s also that season, unfortunately—but the one where it’s time to start thinking about what movies are coming out next year.

What, like you weren’t already thinking about it? C’mon.

The UK’s Times Online has published their predictions for the 50 biggest movies of 2009, and there are a half-dozen family and kiddie notables on the list.

They’ve pegged (amongst others) the following movies, which those of us with little ones may want to keep in mind:

I’m just glad for those last two; before I got to those, I was certain that all 2009 held was a bunch of sequels with colons in them….

Highlights remains timeless

Monday, November 10th, 2008

I’ll never forget the look on my oldest child’s face, the first time she found a Highlights magazine in the pediatrician’s waiting room and brought it to me to read to her. “You know,” I said, as she got settled on my lap, “I used to read this magazine when I was a little girl.”

Her look was two parts skepticism and one part fear. The skepticism was, I assume, because she doubted that that very magazine had been anywhere other than on the doctor’s end table, never mind that I’d been a little girl sometime during the Pleistocene Era. The fear was probably because she wondered if Mommy was finally losing it. But I explained that Highlights has been around for a loooooong time, and I, too, had loved it as a kid.

(I have just three words for you: Weekly allergy shots. I read a lot of magazines.)

Of course my kids have had plenty of years to love Highlights, but I was thrilled to discover that Highlights still has a special place in its heart for those of us who grew up with the Timbertoes. Check out I Was a Highlights Kid! to read stories from other grown-ups who loved the magazine, growing up. Who says your kids should get to have all the fun? (I also quite enjoyed the Goofus or Gallant Quiz. That really took me back.)

Ah, memories. The Pleistocene Era was a good time, you know.
